The Regents Exam in English Language Arts (Common Core) is designed to measure students’ achievement of the Grade 11-12 Band Common Core Learning Standards (CCLS) for English Language Arts (ELA). The CCLS for English Language Arts make up a broad set of literacy expectations for students and define literacy through an integrated model in which Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening, and Language operate in tandem to enable students to comprehend, analyze, evaluate, and communicate complex information.

How the Exam is Designed

New York State high school Regents Exams are developed by the State Education Department in collaboration with New York State high school content certified educators. The input of educators in all phases ensures that the diversity of New York State students is represented in the test development process. The educator input process also means that the tests are designed with an understanding of students' CCLS instructional experience. New York State assesses 11th grade students in order to ensure they will graduate with knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in college and their careers.
